Having spent time and money on gaining a Diploma in Dreamweaver I now find
most businesses require online shopping sites. Is it possible to build it
completely in DW or stick with something like CubeCart. Seems a waste after
so much studying

Yes - but you'd have to be quite adept at some server scripting language.
There are many excellent shopping carts available for DW, including ones
from WebAssist, Cartweaver, InterAKT (now Adobe), YourVirtualStore, etc.
Depening on your hosting and your personal skills, you should be able to use
one of them with no problem.
