Default An Old-Timer’s Dilemma With Acrobat/FrameMaker

I want to create a pdf print version file using Acrobat 4.0/OS9 from FrameMaker 6.0/OS9. When Adobe abandoned Mac Framemaker I already had 4 years into a lengthy textbook project and I did not want to abandon it. So I have stuck with this old system and it has gone fine. Problem is that when I create a pdf version by making my printer Adobe Acrobat the text is OK but the graphics are only partially drawn and at low resolution. I have given Distiller 100MB of memory but that has no effect. And I have not been able to access Distiller parameters but even if I did the manual does not mention this problem.

    Fred,

The problem does not lie with distiller, but perhaps the graphics you
are using. What type of graphics are you using? I thing your Acrobat
should be updated to 4.0.4, Frame 6 should be udpated to the latest
version 6 patches and you should be using at least 9.0.2 or 9.0.3. I
think you you may find an updater to 9.1.x, but 9.0.2 or 3 should be
    sufficient.

Are you using PDF Writer as the print driver? It does not process EPS graphics. Create a PostScript file and drop it on Distiller. The other possibilty is the Distiller settings are too low.

You can tell which problem it is by seeing if the raster (pixel) graphics are OK but the vector graphics are bad. Then it is the Distiller settings. If the opposite, it is PDF Writer.

If ALL graphics are bad, try testing just a few pages at a time to see if the problem goes away.

Good catch David. I forgot about the old PDFMaker, since FrameMaker has come with Distiller since at least 5.0. PDFMaker would account for the symptoms described.
