Anchor Points and handles not visible on a path

while doing some keystrokes, I lost the ability to see the anchor points and handles on a path. I also can't see text highlighting when I triple click on a text path.

System: Windows XP Home; operating speed 2.8 gig; 512 mb ram; Nvidia G Force graphics card; Plenty of free space.
