Anoying text outlines - Adobe Illustrator Windows

When editing text in CS there are these annoying turquoise outlines around the type. With many designs, it's impossible to see what's going on and it's very hard on the eyes. I've checked help files and searched the forum. Is there any way to turn the outlines off or change the color? It's next to impossible for me to enter large amounts of type or edit paragraph size text because the preview is so annoying....

Rick, the color corresponds to the color set for the layer, and can be changed (layer Options). If you have Smart Guides turned on, turn them off, (View > Smart Guides, or Ctrl+U), and see if that's more to your liking.

....and if you're talking about the Bounding Box, you can turn them off via Show/Hide Bounding Box (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+B).

....and if you're talking about the edge of a text container, you can hide it via Show/Hide Edges (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+H).

Makes no difference what I set the BG color to or whether or not I have handles hidden.

    Who's idea was this anyway?

Rick, when I type into a text box with Smart Guides on, it looks like your first line...when I type with Smart Guides disabled, it looks like your second line. If yours looks like line 1 either way, you may need to reset your preferences.

Resetting prefs did it. Goofy thing is that it's been that way from the first day. I even looked at the old and new prefs and didn't see any differences.

    Every thing is fine now.
    Thanks everybody....

Rather than disabling smart guides alltogether, go to Edit>Preferences>Smart Guides & Slices, and turn off only "Object Highlighting".
