Any secrets to networking iBook and WinXP laptop via Ethernet? - Mac Networking

Any reason I can't get my iBook to talk to a computer running WinXP, via a crossover cable strung between the Ethernet ports? In the "Connect to server..." command in OS X, I get a "-36" error code. Entity H.B. Elkins spoke thus:

Main things I keep in mind:
    1) Use a crossover cable if both machines have a non-autosensing ethernet
card. For a straight cable, at least one machine must have an autosensing
    card.
    2) Turn off antivirus on the XP box.
    3) Attempt to logon from your Mac using smb://MACHINENAME/ShareName where
ShareName is the name in the Window folders "Share name" box(can be
    different from the folder name).
    4) Under the best of conditions the Mac may take several minutes to notice
the Winbox, so be patient. When I reinstalled XP it took several reboots of
XP to get it to recognize the Mac.

Not an uncommon situation. Rumor has it that a fix for Mac/XP
compatibility will be forthcoming in 10.3.3, but that's just rumor of
    course.

In the meantime, you can transfer stuff by turning on FTP services on
the Mac. It's not ideal, but it will work.

What are you entering in the Connect to Server box? I use
"smb://machinename" and it will then prompt you for a username and
password. Enter that, and you will get a dialog asking which share you
    want to connect to.

I use this daily here and it works fine.
