Any way to connect two points? - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Here's my problem. I have two points that, if they were connected, would for a curved line (both have control handles extended). Is there any way I can get Illustrator to connect them without losing the position of the control handles? I can select both points and press ctrl-J to join them, but that just connects them as a straight line. -David...

    join the two points
use the delete anchor point tool to remove one of the points
then use the direct selection tool to select the remaining point, and
you should get a bezier handle to manipulate
this should do what you need it to do
