Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
For me it was for the third time
( It is kind of not so simple trip all way from Sweden )
, and I think it was the best ,
probably because I´m a photographer and there was so
much new stuff for shooters .
I went actually to all LAB/curves sessions with Mr Margulis ,
and those moire and noise reduction techniques seems to be usefull ,
I have already started to sharpen in LAB .
And thank you folks for all SF info ,
I like this city a lot ( comes second to NY ,
but seems more fun to me than LA :-) , maybe because I´m European )
I got busted by some soldiers ( camouflage clothes )
under Golden Gate. I was trespassing a fence ( with hoppers hands )
( Grrrrrrh, I´ll be probably
not allowed into US anymore )
just trying to get that perfect angle ( I didn`t get it )
But all other things was nice ....
It was nice beeing able to get a
wireless Internet access outside new opened Apple Store too :-)
across my hotel close to Market .
Maybe illegal that too ....
Thanks again for all SF tips ( I bought all things I wanted ) ,
and travel was nice too .

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
jann,
Thanks for sharing your experience. But this is the Photoshop forum. Was there a Photoshop question you wish to ask?

Neil,
While you weren't looking, Jann started a thread about his trip before he left Sweden.

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
jann,
For god's sake (and your own images) do _NOT_ convert to Lab merely to sharpen an image. . .regardless of how attractive Dan may make it seem, you are stepping on _ANY_ RGB file just by doing the conversion. Far better to pop a new layer, set to Luminosity blend mode and then sharpen that. The effect will be the same-sharpening the luminosity of an image-without converting to Lab.
I suggest you read Bruce Fraser's article at:
<http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/20357.html>
But do NOT convert to Lab just to sharpen, ok?

Jann,
What Jeff says. I missed the part in your post about your sharpening in LAB mode. It's not a good idea.

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
Sorry for the OT detour ,
I was more curious if someone else was inspired as much as me by the conference,
Sharpening in LAB was on of the many things .
As to converting to LAB ,
Dan was saying that this back and forth convertion is completely safe,
of course I´m aware that this is not true , but
I made a simple experiment ,
I took a well defined photo and converted it to LAB and back to RGB ,
later put it above not converted original file and changed blending mode to "difference" I couldn`see anything but black with my eyes , and a histogram
discovered really small difference between those two .
After beeing with PS since version 2.5 I `m starting to be less paranoid about "this will destroy your original pixel information " things :-)
( like in real life I wouldn`t bother eating a sandwich just
because it would surely destroy my original cholesterol balance )
I could agree with Jeff that probably switching to LAB just for sharpening is
not worth it ( I would normally sharpen , and "fade" to luminosity ), but there was some other techniques like removing moire and color noise in LAB that seemed very interesting .
It looked VERY promising on Dans samples , I will give those tricks a try by myself ( as with everything it is not a universal remedy ,
and he pointed that out too ).
I know Dan has a lot of controversiall ideas , but that made the classes also fun , earth would be a very boring place if everyone has the same opinions ....

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
Jann,
I'm almost jealous that you got to sit in on a class where Dan actually taught you something. I feel cheated in a way because last year in Miami it seems all he wanted to do was rant about color management being broken. I was so looking forward to his class (as I've studied his books a great deal over the years) but once I got there I wished I had chosen another one.
Maybe I should give Dan another change this year in Orlando?

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
LRK ,
I have been attending three of Dans classes , and he didn`t mention color management at all ,
I was a bit afraid that he would talk only about CMYK ,
but in the audience a vast majority ( he used a hand rise ) was phtotographers , and people working in RGB ,
..
Of course I will be evaluating things he has been talking about , and
images I have to deliver on monday still has a great deal of adjustment layers ,but it was a surprise that he talked about so much new things that
was not in his book .
I´m sure his blue channel noise removal
technique will be a life saver one day ....
Some other instructors maybe amusing ( like Scott K ) but in my opinion
there is little use for many of their tricks ,
and there is no point in accessing
their classes ( most of the things are in the book )
, unless you want to hear a bit tiresome jokes like ,
" this technique fixes this image in 60seconds ,
but I´m sure you will charge 3 minutes ... ".
OTOH , I know Scott is a very popular instructor , So I´m sure
it is a highly personal choice ,
The sessions I liked most was Dan , Russel B ( despite his show ,
and because of his briliant java scripts , written by someone else /Adobe/)
and Julieanne K .

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
Jann,
I agree about Scott Kelby. He is entertaining and a very nice guy, but his classes tend to be more beginner to intermediate level. I attended some of his classes my first year (2000) and one class on Euro Collages in 2002, but generally go for some of the others now.
My favorite instructors are Ben Willmore, Taz Tally, and Julienne Kost... followed by Jack Davis, Bert Monroy, and Deke McClelland. My very favorite used to be Rob Kerr but he ended up getting sick and I'm not sure what happened to him. I really miss him not being there.
Anyway, when I look at each years schedule I first highlight all the instructors I like, then I check subject matter. After having attended four years of PS World I find there are a lot of repeat classes so finding something new is more of a challenge. Still, even with repeat classes there's usually something to be gleaned, especially if the instructor is more advanced.
Each year does seem to get better than the year before though and I look forward to going again and again.

Hey Neil...
Why not just give Jann a link to the Lounge?

Many of us there might be happy to talk about the S.F. trip.
Come visit us, Jann.

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
What's wrong with this thread? Is it not Photoshop related? As I see it there are many professional (and nonprofessional) Photoshop folks who might benefit from this topic. But not all would be comfortable in the Lounge.

I agree with Linda.
This whole thread is closely related to Photoshop and has no place in the "Lounge" where it would almost certainly get trashed within the next four postings.

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
Jann,
Try your RGB-to-LAB-and-back experiment with a photograph that includes a lot of detail. Save and close the image between conversions. I bet you will see differences, not just black.

I wouldn't climb any fences if I were you, Hopper Hands or no Hopper Hands.
I sent you a link you can see what can happen. Especially in Central Park New York,
don't look at the link if you are squeamish it really is gross.

Re: Anyone been to PSWorld in SF ?
-->Dan was saying that this back and forth convertion is completely safe,
Dan's wrong, period. ANY colorspace conversion will introduce rounding errors. Obviously doing this on a high bit file helps. There's also the issue of mapping colors into LAB and back. Plus it all takes time. There's no reason to do this, it's an old technique (like a lot of what Dan teaches I'm afraid to say) that isn't at all necessary since Photoshop lets you do the equivalent using the lumanosity blend with even more control using fade.
