Anyone else having problems with PS and XP Pro?

I'm running Photoshop 7.0 (with all current updates) on a Dell 8250 -plenty of speed, memory, what have you... with XP Pro (with all current updates)... but just over the last few days, I've been experiencing problems working in Photoshop (as well as MS Word). Sometimes it'll work and sometimes it'll just inexplicably shut down on me. Sometimes my PC will actually be nice enough to let me know that Photoshop has stopped responding and give me the option to send a report to Microsoft... like a lot of good that has done so far.

Although I am quite certain this is probably a Microsoft or XP issue, I just haven't had much luck in getting any answers or help from there. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been having this problem. I've done numerous scans for viruses, etc. But McAfee says my PC is clean.

I got to be honest and say this is lousy timing. I'm a graphics consultant and I need this stuff to work. If anyone has any solutions, please let me know!!! THANKS!!!!

Sounds to me like a hardware problem. Have you recently installed any
new toys on the computer? New softare? Drivers?

Since this is happening cross-application, it is not likelu a Word or
Adobe problem. Have you deleted all temp files, done a scan disk, defrag?

I have had photoshop do the same thing with it locking up in the last day. When I go to save files on my external 1394 hard drive. XP tells me that PS in not responding and finially end photoshop,
XP tells me there is a problem writing to a network drive. I don't know what's up but I have checked all conections and they're fine and it's been working just fine for quite some time. Anyone else have answers. Thanks

Try saving locally, THEN move to the external drive/network.

Well, everyone, I think I've discovered what's been causing this problem. I had a similar problem earlier on when I first got this computer and somehow it just sort of popped back into my head that this might be the reason why PS and Word just shuts down on me. I don't know if it applies to the problems you're having, Alan, but I hope it does.

Because of my work, I try to keep working files extremely organized to differentiate between clients and different projects within the same client. Unfortunately, the problem arises where the directory path for particular graphics becomes ridiculously lengthy because the graphics lie within a folder that's nested in another folder that's nested in another folder and so on. I think what's happening here is that the file's directory path becomes so long, it just makes the applications that you're trying to insert the graphic in or even just view the graphic CHOKE.

So I moved the current work folder that I'm working on right now onto my desktop and whaddayaknow, PS and Word are working just fine. I've been working in this mode for about 2 days straight and not so much as one hiccup or glitch.

I guess at the conclusion of this project, I'll just move everything back to the directory or better yet, just archive it all on CD.

Also it may be time for a complete reformat and reinstall of the operating system. Windows gets funky after about 6-8 months of use, so I back up and reformat all 4 of the drives and reinstall a clean version of XP then do a clean reinstall of all software.--Time consuming but necessary--sort of like having your teeth cleaned.

I'm piggybacking because I didn't see the original post.

I have a friend at Microsoft. A real geek. When I complained about problems
after upgrading to SP1, his answer was, "Why not just reinstall your OS and
stuff that you've Ghosted to your portable HD?" (In other words, "SP1 breaks
XP most of the time.")

I blinked. Hrm. Suggestion: with XP, you are GOING to have to reformat more
often than you did with prior Windows versions. (Complain, Get a Mac, or
....) Get Ghost (or something like it) and a portable drive. Reformat. Make
it perfect. Ghost it. Every now & then (like once a month), re-Ghost.

(I keep data on D: in RAID with E:. Only my programs are on C:) Expensive at
first, but this is my main business machine and my data is more valuable
than the cost.
