Anyone recommend sigma 70-200/2.8 EX? - Photography

I'm currently considering purchasing the sigma 70-200/2.8 EX (APO) lens by sigma... anyone here "use and recommend" it? any comments on its optics/AF/handling/build etc? by all accounts it's as sharp as the canon 70-200L, not as "nice" maybe to handle, no IS, and of course not white, but at 1/3 to 1/4 the price, i'm not arguing... anyone?...

Handling seems to be an individual thing. You might actually have to go
    outside.

Any lens with that construction is a brick and needs a monopod at the least.

I've used the 24-70 2.8 EX sigma, and it is quite sharp, with good build
quality and balance, if it's any indicator for the 70-200 ...

I use one. I have not used the Canon IS so can not compare it at all. I will
say is pretty crap at the 70mm. At 135-200mm it is pretty good. It is sharp
at that range, not quite as sharp as the Canon 50mm f/1.4 at same stops.
Focuses fast, and pretty good in a dry dusty desert. At 200mm it seems a
little shrper that the Canon 200mm f/2.8 but not better contrast. I have
used the 70-200L f4 lens and it is slightly sharper and contrastier.

    Ummmmm....

You must have the muscles of a 3yr old to think like that. They aren't a
    heavy lens.

Something like a 300/2.8 or the big primes I'd agree with you, but not the
    70-200, they are pretty lightweight.

I have one... I keep trying to bring myself to sell it and replace it
with the Canon 70-200 IS lens... but for the price difference is more
    than my car is worth.

    So I will keep it.

I have the Canon EOS version.. it is the Sigma 70-200mm f 2.8 EX HSM.
Focus is fast and quiet... full time manual focus works a treat to "fine
tune" the camera's focal point selection.
The only thing I don't like is that it zooms the wrong way... though you
get used to it.. oh.. and some time the 1.5m? closest focus is still too
far away for that tight portrait... but the Canon L lens is similar form
    memory.

That is true... it is a heavy bugger especially attached to a EOS 3 with
a PBE2 and a 550 flash ... that is why I'd like the canon IS version...
to stop that muscle strain wobble

This lens takes lovely pictures when they're taken with a pod

Default Yes used it and recommend it

    Hi Warren
I have used it and recommend it. Sharp across the range and fast focuses.
Build qualitgy is pretty good. At a 1/3 the price you cant go wrong
    wayne handling is pretty good

Warren, I have the lens and am quite happy with it. My only gripe with it is
that it does seem a little soft wide open. The reviews on the fred miranda
site seem to indicate this also. I had to send the first one back to HK due
to the lens focussing too far towards the front.

It is a very nice lens, with quick AF, and handling and build are top notch.
I also have the 180mm Macro Lens and it is superb.
