.ape files are files used by the Application Enhancer & haxies/apps designed to operate under them. They are not audio files, as far as I know. I use Application Enhancer to run WindowShadeX, XSounds, FruitMenu, ShadowKiller, ClearDock, and Audio Hijack Pro (AH Pro is not a haxie like the others - but a very cool audio sweetening app that makes it possible to do many things).

Go to http://www.unsanity.org to learn more about haxies, and go to http://www.rogueamoeba.com to learn about AH Pro.

Actually, I think the OP was referring to .ape files in the sense of
Monkey's Audio files. They are a way to losslessly compress music
(WAV) files, similar to SHN or FLAC.

    See http://www.monkeysaudio.com for details.

As for playing back on a Mac, nobody's taken up the challenge of
writing a QuickTime filter or stand-alone player. The source code is
available, but it's beyond my meagre programming skills.

If you've got the inclination, check it out!

    Best,
