Default Applying master pages/folios doesn't work on existing spreads?

I have a small 12 page A4 document with auto page numbering set-up on the only masters (facing pages) when adding new pages the folio's show up fine, however when trying to apply the master to an already existing page it doesn't work. I have tried all methods of applying the master with no luck.
I have tried doing the same thing with a new document and this works fine.

Margin and columns adjusted on the master update fine but folios don't show on old pages.

Am I missing something really obvious here or is this document corrupted?

    Thanks in advance

Try deleting your InDesign Preferences. IMMEDIATELY after launching InDesign (within a half-second), hold down four keys—Cmd + Option + Shift + Ctrl. Then choose to Delete Preferences at the prompt.

Steve, thanks a lot for the quick reply, just tried that and it didn't work (I deleted prefs at the prompt).

It seems any objects I place on the masters don't show on existing pages - not just page numbers...?

OK, I knew it would be something simple - highlighting the page in the pages palette and selecting 'show master page items'!

Funny. I never think to turn that item on or off so that didn't occur to me. Thanks for letting us know what it was.
