ASP or PHP?
Hi everyone!
I'm almost a newbie in dynamic websites.
i want to know which of server-side scripting languages (ASP or PHP) is
better and more powerful for me to start learning?
Best wishes

Re: ASP or PHP?
That really depends on what background your coming from...
For me I've only programmed in VB so ASP-VBScript was my choice. But
I'm now learning Javascript/Jscript so I can do Client front end
better - but I'm also doing server side ASP in javascript now.
PHP is a no no for me... I dont know anything about it.
I don't think there is any real difference in "powerful" between them
- the site is only as powerful as the coders
If your totally new with no coding experience whatsoever then I would
go for ASP-VBscript

hmmm....
asp newsgroup, what do you think the answer would be?? Maybe the the
opposite of the answer you would get in a PHP newsgroup?
If you think I'm being harsh, visit these fellas.

"Better" depends on your situation and environement. If you run an
Apache shop, PHP would be better, Microsoft/IIS shop, more likely ASP.
More powerful also depends on your situation. Both can likely
accomodate your needs currently, but your employer(s) may have
specific needs.
So the answer is actually, learn both. Though you'll likely want to
start off in ASP.NET if you're not familiar with ASP to begin with.

Quoting a FAQ, legitimately, is "nothing to say"? Do you go to Oracle
newsgroups and ask if you should use Oracle or DB2?

Dear Half-Inch, Chafe and Itch, or whatever....
You've got to admit it was a pretty dopey question to ask in an ASP group.
Kinda like going to the Ford dealership and asking if a Chevy might be a
better choice than a Ford.
Also, nice snip job to put my response completely out of context. Keep up
the good work.
In addition, you really need to bone up on the definition of troll. If
anything, it's the OP's question that has the troll potential.

You still haven't come up with anything even slightly constructive or
helpful, eg. your wisdom on the "appropriate" place to post his question?

And, you, on the other hand, have been very helpful? Guess I missed your
input on the original question.
Besides misconstruing and twisting my response, what do you have to add that
is constructive?
You still need to work on your understanding of the term "troll"

Definitely entertaining and the best troll def. I've seen. Good call Brynn.
To the OP (original poster), unless you have a cross-reference comparison
Harag is correct, it depends on your perspective. However, let's be sure
you're comparing ASP Classic to PHP. ASP.NET is different because you use
VB and/or C# and ASP.NET is a whole other animal. In classic you use
VBScript/JScript(Javascript).
Another variable will be the web server. ONLY IIS supports ASP. You can
install Sun's Chili!Soft on Apache but it is not completely ASP compliant
and IMHO, sucks rotten eggs from a hen house floor. Jes' sayin'... (O:=
Usually, PHP is used on Apache and ASP on IIS. You can use PHP on IIS but
it obviously is not Microsoft's preferred choice of server-side scripting
engines. You can even use Perl if your heart desires but once again, it's
not the norm for IIS.
I didn't have the same feeling of using VBScript coming from VB as Harag did
and finding it an easy transition. Some things are different and the
languages are close so sometimes it is confusing because you might mix the
two. I don't think PHP is hard to learn but I prefer ASP over PHP. I would
be at a PHP web site if I chose the latter.
I'm not taking sides but Bob is correct about one thing, that is pretty much
the response you would have gotten from a Linux group. Here's an example:
http://www.sloppycode.net/aspphp/
The discussion is setup as PROs(ASP/PHP) / Cons(ASP/PHP). The first PRO for
ASP is:
reza Sun 30th Nov 2003, 03:40:12
asp is bad . anyone know this .
asp programmers too
---
Reza is obviously an idiot and is unable to either comprehend English or
follow directions. Translated: That means reza can be compared to that old
chant: "Give me Linux or give me death!" Ok, if you insist!

Oh grow up. The guy quoted a FAQ (you can even see that Bob is showing some
respect by saying "if you think I'm being harsh, visit these guys."). Bob
is also very sensitive about http://www.aspfaq.com/5003, which he feels is
too strongly worded. And he is certainly more helpful here than you have
demonstrated. This is the only thread I see you participating in, and it's
to berate someone else, rather than help anyone.

Re: ASP or PHP?
I used to help quite a bit on this group and a couple of the more
poular ASP yahoo groups back in the day ... when 2.0 was going to 3.0
and yahoo groups just got started. I am done being a prick and going
back to being helpful.
I just got back on these to NGs 2 days ago. I couldn't believe some of
the bullsh*t he was pulling with the noobs ... I remember when I was a
noob ... but don't remember all of the attitude.
I just saw a few of his other little cry-baby posts and was getting
fed up, even before starting to post again. And I am apparently not
the only one who has seen this.
In any case, you are right Aaron ... I am not going down to that level
.... and I am done with it. Back to helpful or nothing.
quoting facts though, who cares ... it is still disrespectful ... I am
sure there is a FAQ out there that says "Your an assh*le" ... but I
didn't put that down for Bob and they say it was a FAQ
In anycase ... end of rant ... end of being "Under The Bridge" with
Bob.
