Great shots! What lens were you using? I just got my D70 and am
looking for a zoom to go up from the far end of the kit lens. If I can
get bird shots like you have here, I'll be tickled to death.

Re: Assateague Under Cover of Snow
I was kind of afraid you were gonna' say that. Before I bought the
Nikon, I was considering both that and Canon and the usual tab for
vibration reduction on either one was somewhere near the price of the
camera or more, per lens, so I guess I'll have to save for another two
years for the lens. ;o)
Guess I'll settle for the 55-200 Sigma that I saw at Sam's club for
$138. It's about half that speed at 4-5.6 and has no VR. I've read
several places that it's okay quality, so I guess I'll be setting up
the tripod and make myself happy with that for now. Thanks for the
response. Happy New Year!

going on a special shooting trip, you might consider something like that.

> Thanks Frank. BTW, did Santa bring your hoped for (IIRC) D70?
Pale: Canon 20D. I am now involved in a rigorous physical training
regimen designed to increase my strength and endurance. I need all the
energy and force I can generate to hoist and control this massive piece
of equipment. Thank goodness I still have the ancient Gitzo Studex iron
tripod to support it.
Santa was very kind (fooled him again, I did ! ) and left the body, kit
lens 18-55, 1.8 50, 10-22 EF-S, and 70-300 IS. That is a daunting array,
and once I get the rest of my person and hardware ducks in a row, will
be the focus of a real storm of activity. A very deliberate, perhaps
even plodding storm, but an intense one, I assure you.
I have been scouting brick buildings for a few weeks. Most convenient so
far is the California National Guard Armory, two blocks over and three
blocks down. One day soon I expect I'll don my body armor and head over
that way. Perhaps I can set up, snap, and decamp before they see my
beachead. Maybe I should wait until the office is open, and ask first.
That Armory, by the way, is notorious as the origin of the dramatic and
sad escapade seen weekly, if not daily, on "Most Magnetic Car Chase Film
That Everyone In the World Has Seen At Least Twice", where the ex-army
guy cranks up a tank, runs over whatever he wants to --except a
pedestrian overpass and the freeway divider barrier-- and gets killed
for his trouble.
I was a telecommuter working at home, and heard the tank's unmuffled
exhaust as he turned the corner to drive over a fire plug and someone's
front yard, two blocks over. Of course the law enforcement helicopter
was quickly joined by those from the three major network affiliates, one
each, and they wouldn't give it a rest.
Three hours after the fellow went to his reward, these (can I coin a
word here?) _chopperazzi_ were still hovering around, standing on two-
or three-hundred-foot columns of battered air. I called and emailed each
station; each had a canned response to my complaint: "The People have a
right to the news." Well, yes. I agree; "however", I said to each, "It
is no longer news. It is buzzarding, picking the bones for every last
shred of carrion. If your camera operators didn't get it within half an
hour of the end, maybe they need new jobs. Maybe all you are doing is
trying to justify the expense of that 'journalistic' toy that spends
most of its time gathering dust at Montgomery Field."
"Tell your pilot to look down", I said. "I will send him a signal
showing my opinion of his --and your-- judgement". He did, and I did,
and he (all three of him) went away.
Amazing. I can still get a rant going after all these years.
Any road, I'll try to keep you current on my struggle to catch up with
Santa's largesse. So far it's a treat: fast focus, no discerable
shutter-lag, big, clear pictures, and a physical mirror-slap to let you
know the deed has been done. Takes me back twenty-five F1n years, it
does.
Happy 2005 and subsequents,
