Anyone know if this is in Fink, or something?

It's not. I'm trying to compile it from source at the moment, and it's
not proving that easy, although I think I have all the prerequisites.

You need to have quite a lot of Fink kde and qt stuff installed, and
then configure the KStars source with:

    ( cd /usr/local; ln -s /sw kde )

    ../configure --with-qt-includes=/sw/include/qt \
    --with-qt-libraries=/sw/lib \
    --with-extra-includes=/sw/include \
    --with-extra-libs=/sw/lib \
    --prefix=/usr/local

It doesn't install well - you need to make a symbolic link in
~/.kde/share/apps so it can find the data.

But aside from that the program does seem to work - I've just finished
    compiliung and installing it.

Oh bother. all that effort compiling it and I could have just
    downloaded it. Sigh.

There are lots, some even freeware or java-based, some very flashy (in
one you can look down to your feet: the screen actually draws feet!).

One of the most serious ones -and mine- is Voyager III.

As can be read in the name it is quite old, and this has the advantage
of both having polished the user interface and being quite extensive
(can read satellite date and have them fly in your sky, can drive
telescopes, can handle the most precise star database available -the
Hipparcos one, add your own images in its own image database...).

The current version runs only under OS9, and they are actively preparing
the OSX one, which should add a number of features (among them the
ability to plot only those satellites that are sunlit during your night,
ie the only ones you can actually see -something no others do...)

There is a downloadable test version on the site of Carina,
    www.carinasoft.com

    it is very nice software.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll take them and do some
    additional research.

I currently have Redshift 3 and went by the manufacturer's website to
see about an OS X version. It would appear they no longer make a Mac
    version! Bah humbug!

    Again, thanks for your input.

StarryNight Pro has just released a new version 4.5. Has some nice new
    features and many bug fixes.

You should also look at XEphem running under Apple's X-11. You can get it
    free from:

Certainly not the best, but for me the following web site will do:

It will remember your coordinates and viewing preferences. Really nice,
    and platform independant.
