Audacity sound problems - Debian

I can play sound files in XMMS, noatun mplayer, etc. but Audacity 1.0.1 won't let me select /dev/dsp as the playback device. The preference dialog gives me an error message "Invalid playback device". I have seen threads on this problem in the list archives of several sites but no one seems to have an answer. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? uname -a Linux maskull 2.4.20-xfs #1 SMP Mit M?r 26 15:37:36 CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux cat /etc/debian_version testing/unstable Here's some of my sound setup info: cat /proc/pci Bus 0, device 7, function 5: Multimedia audio controller: VIA ...

I also receive this error. I just basically don't mess with it. I just make
    sure of these things:

    - use OSS drivers (or enable OSS emulation in ALSA drivers) for your card
    - kill esd, aRts or whatever sound server you have running beforehand
    - everything else should Just Work (TM)

same, HOWEVER, mine is working :P ill enlighten you:
kill every single program that has touched /dev/dsp, restart Audacity,
and dont dare goto the perfs screen. if you start Audacity, use another
program or have another program that has touched /dev/dsp, for some
reason it plays silly buggers and wont let you listen to anything. apart
from things like that its a neat little program, I use it in conjuntion
with TerminatorX to DJ (Audacity for fixing the beats up, TerminatorX
    for scratching on them)
