auto page numbers funny stuff.

I put in auto page numbers in the master pages with regular number, like 1,2,3,4, etc. But the strange thing is it looks like this:
1. 1
1. 2
1. 3
etc.
Where does the "1." come in? In numbering options I did not select to show prefix or section info, so don't see how to change it. Tried absolute number as well. Still the same.

Suggestions very welcome.
