    Default Automatic Typesetting

    Hi There,

I know I'm missing something simple here (I hope I am anyway), but this issue has been plaguing any work we do in InDesign for a year - so I need to find a fix!

How do you turn off the typesetting or line breaks InDesign seems to do automatically?

I find that when I bring a word down to the next line, a different word will also be changed 3 lines up in the same paragraph.

Or a small word like 'an' will just not go up to the next line despite there being enough room for two an's.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

I should clarify in the example above that I am trying to manually take the word 'an' up to the next line - which it does but InDesign deletes the space. If I add a space, InDesign automatically brings the word down?

What you're looking at is the paragraph composer and it's what makes
InDesign-set type far superior to any other pagelayout application.

If you really want to dumb it down, switch to the single line composer.

But you'd be doing yourself a big favor by learning how to use properly
    instead of fighting it.

I'm with Bob - the paragraph composer is a great feature. And, if you have to, you can use the no break attribute to keep text together when using it.

    Hey Bob,

Thanks for your reply but I'm not trying to fight it - I'm asking for help.

I literally cannot finish this job until I get the word 'an' up to the next line - if you can believe that!

Would you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this with paragraph composer on?

    Cheers

As Dominic suggests, use the no break attribute.

If there is enough room for 'an' on the line above, putting a soft
return (shift + return) behind the 'an' may also make it jump up to the
    line above.

Or do a shift-return for a forced line break.

Big thumbs down on that. It's fine with a single line composer but I'd
stay away from it with the paragraph composer.
