Avoiding the repetition of a Master Pageelelment in Links Pallette
Hi all.
I have a question (but of course!):
I am creating a book with many master pages. For each section, I use about four different masters. These masters consist of a background design, created in Illustrator, and text boxes, created in InDesign, that conform to the shapes in the background.
When I create a new spread and apply my master to it, I want to 'unlock' the text boxes so that I can type in them. I override my master and then the boxes are accessible. Great, except that by doing this, I notice in the Links pallette that InDesign 'doubles' that master page. This becomes annoying if I ever have to go back to my original Illustrator background to change something. Then I have to update ALL the InDesign pages that use that master.
Is there a way around this where I can somehow override the page for its text boxes only then remove the override so that the boxes remain active, while the background isn't - thus making InDesign only link the illustrator file once?
I hope I explained myself well.
Thanks!
B.

Linking to pages that are based on a master flows text to master?
Why? Has anyone else had problems with this? I saw some discussion of it in a previous thread, but saw no solutions. Any ideas? -

Re: Avoiding the repetition of a Master Pageelelment in Links Pallette
I don't think so, I'd like to know if you can though. The fact that each linked piece of art has the page number associated with it makes me think you can't.
The only work around I can think of if you have a lot of the same piece of art to relink is do it once, then save and close your doc, then reopen and it will relink the rest.

If you only need the textboxes, only use the textboxes. You don't have to release all the objects from the master to use the textboxes. Just shift click on them and they will be there. You can also click on them with a loaded text cursor and they will come to the page. No need to release everything from the master to use a few items.

Actually it's Command-Shift-click
Didn't know about the loaded cursor trick!

Re: Avoiding the repetition of a Master Pageelelment in Links Pallette
Here's an idea:
On the theory that you want to release and use all the text boxes from master pages onto all the document pages, make a new layer called text and move all the text frames on the master pages to this layer. Then, after you get your basic document setup with the correct masters applied to the correct pages, make the base layer with the linked art invisible, shift click on all the pages in the pages palette to select them all, then execute the "Override all master page items" command, and all the text will move to the document pages, while the linked art will remain only on the master to be re-revealed in the layers palette.
