Back Up to Zip - Mac Applications & Software

I back up a limited number of files to a zip disk on a regular basis. Is this adequate? Should I be using some back up software or is the Zip enough?...

Unless you have a zip drive that goes bad. Two years ago I had an external
zip100 (USB) that seemed to write to disks just fine. Trying to copy the
data back to the HD resulted in files that were corrupted. For example,
Powerpoint would complain that files were not a powerpoint doent.

The disks were unreadable on other computers equipped with internal or
external zip drives. Luckily for me, our network administrator did weekly
backups of our computers using retrospect over the network.

On the other hand, other zip drives purchased at the same time as the drive
that went bad have been functioning perfectly.

As an anecdote about the bad drive -- a friend suggested soaking the drive
in an ethanol bath in a sonicator for 30 seconds and then drying it out.
Didn't do a darn thing, but I felt like a fool dumping a gallon of 200 proof
    ethanol into the sonicator bath.

    Ah, yes. Good point.

Yeah, there are definitely better uses for ethanol. <g> (And before
someone points it out, yes, I'm aware that 195 proof ethanol is the
purest you can get by water distillation and that 200 proof ethanol is
    toxic.)
