    Default background images

is there a standard size for background images. so that it doesn't repeat over
and over or only a part of the image fills whole screen. I create my images in
photoshop save them and then add into my pages. I would like to have an image
in the background and add links over it. for some reason the background image
has its own mind. actually contribute has its own mind. I have had nothing
much but trouble. I am using a Mac with intel chip.
