Re: Background map??
You can create a cylinder or sphere surrounding your world then map a
background texture onto it (a wrap). You can do this using 3DS Max or with
Lingo. On the other hand, a backdrop is merely a background (whereas an
overlay is displayed in the foreground) and won't move with your world,
because it is a 2D texture attached to the camera. So, I think the first is
best, expect if you want to create a Resident Evil kind of app.

Re: Background map??
If you want to use a backdrop, try Backdrop Tweening in the Chrome Lib set
of behaviors:

You will be able to make your backdrop fade in, blend several backdrops
together, as well as adding some prerendered animation in the background.

Re: Background map??
I know what ya mean with the long day thing...
Chosing your method depends of course on why you need the background map:
here's another solution which is very simple but very limited:
Set your 3D Sprites background to "background transparent" (only works if
you disable the "direct to stage"). Now your 3D Sprite is transparant and u
can use any other sprite as background!!!!
This may have it's limitations, as said before, but if u don't need more
than that, then why torture your brains ;o)
Hope this tip is usefull...

grabs the image of whatever is behind the 3D sprite and makes a backdrop
of it in the 3D scene. It´s not optimized and it would have to be
re-coded if someone is planning to put an animated background.
