Default bad magic number during install.. please help

    hi all,

I have searched this news group for previous similar problems and have
found many similar but none that applied directly to my problem so
    here it goes..

I am trying to install solaris 8 on a sun ultra 10 which has 2 ide
    drives.

I have originall solaris 8 disks.

when I run the install the first time, it formats the disk alright but
after the automatic reboot, I get a
"bad magic number in disk label
    cant open disk label package
    Evalutaing: boot /pci1f,0 etc

    Cant open boot device....

so what does this means? (sorry first time installing experience with
    sun)

does this means that my disk is bad?

    please help
    thanx

    Sorry can't help you directly.

    1. Have the U10 been working with these disk before and how big are the
    disks?

There has been issues in the past with big IDE disks and some Solaris
    releases and Openboot version.

    2. What version of Solaris 8 do you have, the latest and last Solaris 8
was 02/02, february release of 2002.

    3. What version of Openboot do you have ( displayed after reset)?

FYI, do you know that you can download Solaris 9 for free from
www.sun.com? That is recommended and then you will get Gnome aswell, so
I would try that if you have a cdburner around.

It doesn't mean anything, other than there is no Unix file systeom on the

    No.

This does not mean that the disk is bad (yet). Try and erase the MBR
(with fdisk /mbr from DOS/Windows) or using Linux tools (etc).
If you can place the disk in a Solaris system and boot -r after, use
format and create the disk label. If not, delete all partitions if
    any. Try again...
