bad service syntax in config file (/etc/inetd.conf)... last message repeated 37 times - Sun Solaris

Hello, We have Sun OS 5.7 (Same as Solaris 7?) running on Ultra Enterprise Server 450. We are getting the following message in the /var/adm/messages file when the daemon tries to start up: bad service syntax in config file (/etc/inetd.conf)... last message repeated 37 times The consequence of this message is that client PCs are not able to telnet into the server. Funny thing is that the machine was running fine and people were able to log in until this morning. I checked the inetd.conf file and it seems correct. The file has not been changed since August 2002. And ...

Default bad service syntax in config file (/etc/inetd.conf)... last message repeated 37 times

    Hello,

We have Sun OS 5.7 (Same as Solaris 7?) running on Ultra Enterprise
    Server 450.

We are getting the following message in the /var/adm/messages file
when the daemon tries to start up:

bad service syntax in config file (/etc/inetd.conf)... last message
    repeated 37 times

The consequence of this message is that client PCs are not able to
telnet into the server. Funny thing is that the machine was running
fine and people were able to log in until this morning. I checked the
inetd.conf file and it seems correct. The file has not been changed
since August 2002. And the server has been rebooted several times
since then. So the possibility of config file changing after Reboot
    is not there.

Anyone has any ideas what it might be?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd say there's "bad service syntax in config file".

If you're not going to show anyone the inetd.conf file, no
    one can help you.

Well, you probably do have something keyed in wrong somewhere, but
post it and we can see.

Also, maybe you should consider this a "sign" and start using
    ssh....

Perhaps it is not in the inetd.conf , did you change the telnetd daemon or
    installed ssh ?
Then perhaps , the daemon got some other parameters within the inetd.conf
    or other path ?

I had exactly this on 21/9/03 on a Solaris 8 system.
I am still cleaning up but it currently looks like a hack
because tripwire reported /usr/sbin/inetd had been modified.
Still cannot get inetd services back on line even after replacing
/usr/sbin/inetd. Might have to rebuild from scratch.

I am still investigating. Any other users with the same problem
    and/or solutions, please follow up.
