Bake grub.conf into MBR (like lilo) - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Is there a way to make grub self contained in the MBR? I basically want the GRUB look/feel/functionality with the LILO installation model. I have a notebook with an internal drive [hda] (XP) and a removeable bay drive [hdb] that is Redhat. I installed GRUB into the MBR but of course it wants to access /hdb/boot/grub.conf. Sometimes I want to remove the second [hdb] drive and install a second battery, but then of course I cannot boot because the grub.conf file is missing. Any help is appreciated. bill...

    I would think you could
create /boot on hda, then copy hdb/boot.... to /hda/boot...

change altconfigfile in menu.lst on hda and run the grub installer
    to indicate where /boot is.

Literally, no. There are 512 bytes in sector 0, of which the last 2 are
flags, and the preceding 64 are the main partition table. This leaves
at most 446 bytes for use by bootstrap programs. Grub already "cheats"
[has necessary bytes that reside outside the MBR, and outside any
filesystem] by using the remaining sectors on track 0 to hold
    additional bootstrap code of Grub.

So, if you want to boot using grub with only the first disk present,
then you must make a /boot directory on the first disk, and use it
to store things such as grub.conf, menu.lst, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions. It sounds like creating a /boot directory
on the first disk is the way to go then. I'll try that this weekend.

    Thanks again.
