Bar code fonts generally produce very poor quality bar codes and they
are also very difficult to use. You would be much better off using a
tool that will generate an image of a bar code instead. The best
program that I know of for producing bar code images is called B-Coder
Professional. You can download a demo from the following URL:

B-Coder will do everything for you including adding in the start/stop
patterns as well as calculate the check digits. You also have full
control over the size of the bar code and you can also save it in any
major graphic file format. For Illustrator you would probably be best
off using a TIF format or if Illustrator supports it, you might also
try the WMF format.
