Baseline grid problem
Hi everyone,
I'm setting up a newsletter template but I'm having problem with the baseline grid. I've set the body text to 9.3 pt with 11 pt leading. In the body text para style I've set the space after paragraphs to 3mm. I've also set the baseline grid options so that the grid is 11pt also.
The problem is that when it snaps to baseline grid the spacing between paragraphs isn't honoured, ie. there's more space between the paras than what I specified. I assume it's doing this because the snapping to the grid is taking precedence and therefore ignoring my specified space after para setting.
Is this just a limitation of using the snap to baseline grid option or is there some fix?
Any tips much appreciated.

Re: Baseline grid problem
If you want to use a baseline grid, then it rules. It overrides all other spacing considerations. So, what you say is to be expected. If your space before is not an exact multiple of your grid, indeed, the space before will not be exactly honored because the grid takes precedence.
Make that space after 11 points and all should be well.

Re: Baseline grid problem
You could set your baseline grid to 5.5 pts., leading to 11, and space after to 5.5 (1.94 mm) you can't have 3mm—the space has to be a multiple of the baseline grid. Set your rulers to points to set space above and below in points.

Re: Baseline grid problem
Thanks for both replies. I just tried both fixes - making the baseline grid increment 11pt worked but it's applying to much space. It does line up text in the columns correctly though. I also tried setting the baseline grid and space after to 5.5pt but although this fix has created better space between paras, the lines of text don't line up at the baseline.
I also noticed when using the grid that if a paragraph ends at the bottom of one column and there's not enough space for one line of text from the following para to go at the bottom of the column then a clear line of space is left at the foot of this first column which makes this first column shorter than all the other columns. Is this again just another limitation of the grid function? I just wondered what you all think of its usefulness - would it be better to give it a miss when using paragraphs with space after applied? But then again I don't know how I'd get the lines of text to align across columns without it - seems like a no-win situation!

Re: Baseline grid problem
The baseline grid is an excellent tool, but it's not magic. You still
need to the proper math to make sure everything lines up correctly.

gher, please disregard the grid for a moment.
Can you show us how you insert half a line in the left column and still have the following paragraph aligned to the right column?
If you have a solution the Nobel-prize for Topography is yours, I am sure.
You'd be able to eat your cake and have it, too.

Thanks again for the reply.
Sorry Gerald not sure what you mean - in any case probably don't have the answer, I'm still pretty new at all this.

Re: Baseline grid problem
gher,
sorry, I was somewhat sarcastic.
Look at this:
www.impressed.de/schulungen/stuff/baselinegrid.png
Inserting a space between paragraphs destroys the balance if the space is not exatcly the space of a line.
This is as basic as 1+1.
Ok, as basic as 345+826.
