beginner's question: how to select an object behind an object? - Adobe Flash, Flex & Director

Just to repeat the question. I have two symbols, one behind the other and the symbol on top has set alpha to some mid value so I can see the object behind it but I had hard time figuring out how to just select that so I can modify it. Sounds like a simple question but hey thanks for any hint! Shawn...

make sure the object underneath is on it's own layer and that way you can
    manipulate it all you want.
