My personal choice is to use Retrospect Express to alternately back up to two
Maxtor 250 GB drives. Retrospect Express is programmed to perform three
backups in the middle of each night, one a "duplicate" and two "incremental."
The duplicate backup is set so that deleted files on the main drive are
removed from the backup. The incremental backups are such that every six
months I will reset one of them, leaving me in a position to always be able
to retrieve any file created within that six month period. Each night, before
the backup runs occur, I swap the Maxtor drives, totally unplugging the most
recently backed up to one from both firewire and power so that I am protected
from lightning blasts and such. The worst that can happen is that I might
lose a single day's work. Each of the Maxtor drives also contains a bootable
copy of OS X 10.2.6 and Retrospect Express.

The cost of the two 250 GB maxtor drives was $800. The "second best"
approach, at least in my mind, would be to only have a single Maxtor drive.

For OS X? Probably Carbon Copy Cloner.

For OS 9? Probably Retrospect Express.

I'm curious as to why Carbon Copy Cloner would be considered superior to
Retrospect Express as the OS-X backup choice? What does Carbon Copy Cloner do
that Retrospect Express doesn't do when performing a duplicate backup with
the option of removal of deleted files? Can Carbon Copy Cloner be activated
from other than an Administrator account? Does Carbon Copy Cloner provide for
incremental backups so that prior versions can be retrieved?
