The Olympus 700 series are about the only sub-$700 digital cameras you can
buy that have 10x zoom... the older ones use Smart Media, and the newer
    ones use xD.

Some of the Sony Mavica series have 10x zoom but write to CDs or floppies.
Who wants to change floppies every 4 photos? The Mavicas are very bulky too

Below 10x zoom, you have one or two models of Olympus 700 series and Sony
    Mavica that have 8x zoom.

There are one or two other manufacturers that offer 5x and 6x zoom but
there aren't many models to choose from. Maybe 3 or 4 total. The vast
majority of digicams max out at 3x optical zoom. Digital zoom is pretty
    worthless.

I would think that the Fujufilm F602z would be worth considering. It has
6x optical zoom and does video (limited by storage). It takes both CF and
    SM Cards.
