First, upgrade to OS 9. iTunes is free from Apple and quite good.

I've read somewhere that there are patches to make iTunes run on 8.6,
too. I could be mistaken though and it was iPhoto.

I'd love to find an iPhoto patch that would allow that program to be
run on something older than OS X.

Ain't likely -- iTunes was originally written for OS 9 and patching it
to run on 8.6 wasn't that major an undertaking. iPhoto, on the other
hand, is written using the OS X "Cocoa" framework, which just doesn't
    exist for pre-X.

here is the link to the patch.

if you use it, be sure to follow the directions closely.

"...download the iTunes Mac OS 8.6 patch, which will unlock the installer
and the iTunes application, so that they will run on Mac OS 8.6 (Mac OS
8.0/8.1 and 8.5/8.5.1 use a different interface library which is not
    compatible with iTunes"

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of 8/ 8.1 had a few
problems that 8.5/8.6 fixed but why bother upgrading to 8.5 since
upgrading to 9 won't cost much more and provides more benefits.

Track Thief is a good, basic app. Not too many whistles or bells, but
works reliably when other apps get bogged down in copy protection. (And
before someone comments, I use it to burn compilations of CDs I own.)

Can't remember where I got it, but try the MIT HyperArchive.
