    Marty,

Definitely go the Canon G3. If you don't mind the larger size, as
opposed to the compacts round these days, pick up the camera under $900
and you're doing very well. Has a really good lens, nice amount of
manual control, and handy things like a swivel LCD screen and hot shoe.
I know they're a discontinued camera but they're still in the shops,
and beats paying an extra $400 for a G5 with one more megapixel. If you
want something a little more compact the Olympus C50 is good value and
still provides manual control. Failing that perhaps even the Sony P10.

    Well done :-)

Anyway, I picked up a Sony DSC-V1 a few weeks back - it's my first
camera. I've been very happy with it. A few sample photos I've taken
    are available:

    http://delmes.customer.netspace.net.au/photos/

The things I really like about it:

    - quite good image quality, especially considering its size
    - compact, so I'm more likely to take it places
    - 640x480 movie support (16fps), streamed as long as you have space
    on the stick
    - considerable control over things like white balance - at least for
    a prosumer grade cam

    A few gripes, too:

    - the battery life is about 80 mins when shooting; less with flash
    - noisy at higher ISOs (performs well for its class, but can't
    compete with a 300d)
    - average macro performance (minimum distance 100mm)

    Happy shooting,
