Bizarre Printing issues
Acrobat 6.0.2, OS X 10.3.4. All files print to my Phaser 7700 faded out and eps vector images look like they're melting much like a Dali painting. I have reinstalled Acrobat twice, reinstalled OS X, repaired permissions, run Printer Setup Repair, dumped my ppd's and reinstalled them. All of this has brought me nothing but frustration. There are several other threads that discuss printing problems and I have not seen one yet that was resolved. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
Nathan,
Thanks for the response. Actually the printer is a Phaser 7700 which is a tabloid color laser. I have tried the same files from preview and they print fine. I have also tried pdf documents from known good sources such as Apple and Adobe and have the same problem. All other apps print fine, it is just an Acrobat issue.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
Is there anyone from Adobe that monitors this forum? I have tried everything to resolve this and don't feel like shelling out $40 bucks to figure it out. Acrobat is the only app that has this problem.

No, not really. That's why it's a User-to-User form.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
We don't have a Phaser 7700 to test with, so it's hard to say what the problem is.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
Gary,
I realize it's a user-to-user forum but in case you haven't noticed there are many Adobe people that offer insight in these forums. I'm looking for info as to whether this is a know issue since I have tried every solution I know of to resolve it. I would suggest that if you have nothing to offer to help resolve the issue you should keep the smart a** comments to yourself. I can venture a guess as to what the initial "A" stands for in your name.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
People from Adobe who comment in this forum are probably monitoring it on their own; they probably aren't required to. It is possible that the folks who create Acrobat do not have a Phaser 7700 to do print testing with and therefore have nothing constructive to offer. I have a Phaser 6250 that I have printed to from Acrobat 6.0.1runninng on OS X 10.3.4 and it seems to be doing a nice job. BTW - I doubt that Gary was being a smart a**. He comments in here often and is generally quite helpful. All comments in this forum are from volunteers.

You're right. One of them just commented in post #5.
Personally, I thought Gary was just being funny, not rude.

Excuse me but if he is an Adobe employee and answered a plea for help with humor, that makes me feel so much better. In fact I think the next time one of my clients calls with a problem I'll just laugh at them. I'm sure they'll think I'm a superstar.

I don"t think that anyone is required to monitor this forum, be they from Adobe or any other company and I never stated anything of the such. And I said nothing negative about Adobe or Acrobat. I was just asking if anyone from Adobe was monitoring (or casually passing by if that makes people feel better). I have a frustrating issue, and while it is not anyone's "responsibility" to offer ideas about how to resolve it, I have exhausted every normal way of troubleshooting and isolating the problem. I was simply trying to see if anyone who has a more intimate perspective of Acrobat could offer ideas since no one else had anything to offer (at least nothing that I hadn't already tried). I apologize if I was harsh with Gary, but an explanation of the structure of the forums added nothing but more frustration, and after all if we're going to get into details, aren't these forums here so that people can resolve problems by sharing experiences. Excuse me if I thought I could come here and resolve a problem without it becoming smothered by people turning this into a thread about the structure of a user-to-user forum.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
I think you're the person who turned this thread about the structure, judging your very harsh (no 'if' about that) post which was uncalled for.
Gary's post was fair enough informing you not to expect any official help from Adobe.
Besides it was post 5 and not 4 that did come from Adobe.
Now to get things back on track, what happens if you select print as image from Acrobat's advanced print dialog box?

Printing as image works with the exception that the color shift. When I re-installed Acrobat I manually removed everything I could find that was associated with Acrobat. I'm wondering if I missed something that would effect printing. Also, I can print to an HP 5100 that I have so it looks to me to be a postscript issue.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
When you get more or less expected output when printing as image, it does indicate a driver/ppd problem, which by the looks of it is specific to pdf and acrobat.
Another thing worth trying would be to create a ps file using the phaser and distill this with distiller to see how that pdf will look like.
I'd would also drop a line with the people who make the Phaser (Xerox right?)

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
Ok so here is the latest. I again re-installed my operating system and then ran the combined 10.3.3 updater to eliminate 10.3.4 from the possible culpritsand then repaired permissions. No luck. Then I ran Nathan's Acrobat un-installer script and then re-installed Acrobat again, leaving it at version 6.0, then repaired permissions again, and no luck. My thinking is that something is corrupted that I'm missing on the removal, but I can't think of what it might be. This was my reason for my original post, looking fo someone that might be able to suggest what file I'm missing when de-installing, or something printing related, such as a cups pref, that might be corrupted. I'm sorry if I asked the question incorrectly before. Mark, do you have any ideas or can you direct me to instructions for absolute complete de-installation?
Thanks

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
Nathan's script cleans out everything that Acrobat installs. Have you tried different settings in Acrobat's Advanced printing, like sendin L2 postscript or unchecking transfer functions, etc.?
Do you have another computer to test with?

Yes, I treid sending the page as level 2 and had no luck with that either. The only way it will print is if I send it as image. Any thoughts on the cups idea? When I re-installed 10.3.3 and ran Permissions repair I got the following results.

I noticed some cups stuff mentioned. Does anyone know if there are printing related prefs files and such that I can trash and see if there may be corruption there.

Re: Bizarre Printing issues
OH MY GOD!!! It appears I finally solved it. It looks like it was something in the printer itself because I went into the support menu on the printer and reset the printer's NV Ram and it is now printing ok. The oddest part of the whole problem is that it only affected Acrobat. Thank you all for trying to help on this and hopefully it stays fixed.
