Black and White Indesign
We are getting more and more things created from Designers who are not Indesign savy.
I wish Indesign had a Black and White color space.
We pick up design's and objects from the Clients files. and They appear to be Black and White or gray scale. But when we PDF them and run it thru the top 3 major US printers Preflights we find weird color issues in the files.
An example of 1
The client created a chart table in Indesign used alternate row with a 20 % black shade and inbetween the paper color.
When we go to PDF and Preflight it we discover a color in the 20% black
now the first row of that tint says its color but the 2nd tint of 20% doesn't.
We run a regular Pitstop flight check and it shows up as a mix of cmyk
We run a K only inspector and it doesn't find it.
This is very annoying. This is only happening in Indesign Jobs these quirky color issues.
I go back to the file i can not find any color.
So we have to rambo the pdf file to convert it to grayscale.
any ideas?
on what is causing this?

Black & White Image with no white box
Tried the "export transparent image" under "help" yet? If I understand correctly, you need a clipping path, that'll do it. -

that would be grayscale.
Also you can convert a PDF to grayscale with Acrobat Pro 7

I appreciate that the op is talking about ID files but nonetheless, beware that it won't convert 'registration' or that favourite colour of windoozers 'auto'. You have to change those manually, probably through Illustrator.

Re: Black and White Indesign
Buko,
yes you can convert it in Acrobate, or even in Pitstop, But you can have some strange affects happen in that conversion. We have seen Tints bevcoming lighter when true grayscale tints have been used. Not a very Safe way to do it.
And yes Some people use Registration color which is a pain.
Just had another job where a RGB DARK green was used.
Can't even see it on the screen.
I think this came from the word file that was used to import the job when the person accepted track changes.
Would be nice if it flowed in as BLACK text and allowed Indesign to style the color.
Have to get the vendor to make sure to select all and make text black.
real pain in the neck.

Do you even know where "auto" comes from? It certain has nothing to do
with Windows.

Bob, do I even care? 8)
I assume it's Word or Pagemaker or summink. 'S a pain, wherever it originates; it certainly smacks of MS stuff being 'helpful'.
So, sir B, if you kindly elucidate, enlighten and elaborate for this particular unwashed, I would be internally grateful...

Re: Black and White Indesign
Yes, it comes from Word and/or Excel. Much like the dreaded "normal"
paragraph style. Last I checked these applications are availabe for the Mac.

You asked for an easy fix I suggested one for correctly prepared files. If ID was able to convert to Grayscale You would still have the same problems with registration color, auto color or any other color that you are having in Acrobat.
If you are that picky make a PDF open it in Photoshop and use channel mixer.
