blending on meshes - Macromedia Director 3D

I'm using 8.5 to script a game & have created hexagonal columns using newMesh. What I can't seem to do is make them semitransparent, by applying a shader with a blend of < 100 Am I doing something wrong, or is it simply that shaders don't allow transparent shaders?...

    Hi,

If you use textures make sure to set the renderFormat property to #rgba8888,
#rgba4444 or #rgba5551. (The last one can only set the alpha to 0 or 100,
    opaque or invisible.)
Check the shader property transparant and make sure to set it to TRUE. Check
the blend-properties (blendConstant, blendFunction, ...) in the help.

    Hope ths get you going,

The transparent shader worked fine on models made from primitives in the same scene, so I think it's something particular about meshes.
