Book is eating chapters
I have InDesign CS 3.0.1 for Windows 2000 PC.
I created nine chapters of a manual. I created the book feature and added all nine chapters. I wanted to make sure everything was okay (skeptic that I am) and started opening each chapter. When I opened chapter 2 it gave me an error message about fonts. I discovered the problem, corrected it and started to save the document. It said it could not save the document to that name because that file no longer existed. I thought, no problem, I'll save it to another name. But, nooooooo, InDesign crashed and took chapter 2 with it. When I went to Explorer/file manager, sure enough, the file was no longer there.
Thinking I had done something wrong, I spent several hours re-creating the file and added it back to the book feature with no problems. Then I opened chapter 3 to make sure everything was okay. When I tried to save it, I had the exact same problem and have now lost chapter 3. This is no longer funny.
This is new software, we have not had time to get any training, yet, and do not have any IT people who can troubleshoot this problem so we are completely on our own.
Please tell me someone has seen this problem before and knows the fix. We are (as everyone is) against a deadline.

This sucks!
Before you go trying to do anymore editing to the remaining chapters, try to save them to another disk.
Your problem sounds incredible because when ID crashes on my machine, it automatically opens the recovery file.

Re: Book is eating chapters
Forgot to add that I work on a large network and we are required to save our files to the network. When I reopened InDesign, it asked if I wanted to run recovery, but could not recover the files. They had vanished into thin air. Needless to say I am decidedly paranoid.
I have decided in the meantime to make a copy of the chapters in another area, so if it eats one of them this time, at least I can go to my hideaway and get my file back. In the meantime, I need to see if I can discover what is going on.

Re: Book is eating chapters
You should ask your system administrator when the last time they performed a backup was.
My system administrator here where I work can recover files that are lost by accident by going through the tape backup.
