Book recommendation
My company just installed the full CS on a bunch of computers. I don't know how much they paid for the software, but it's too damn much if Adobe is too cheap to provide manuals.
So what would be a good book, or books, for learning and reference for CS. I've very experienced with Illustrator, Acrobat, and Photoshop, and learning ID mostly on my own. I and one other user would want intermediate to highly advanced books, but others would need beginner to intermediate. Perhaps we would best be served with two books or sets of books to cover this range.
BTW: This must stop.

Re: Book recommendation
Buy the manuals if you want them that badly.
As for books, Sandee Cohen's Visual Quickstart Guide and Real World
InDesign by David Blatner and Olav Kvern would be the top two.

The PDFs on the installation CD-ROMs have *much* more detail than the

I do not have control over what is bought. If I did I'd be in the OTHER InDesign forum.

Thank you. I assume the former is a good intro level book. Does the latter cover more advanced features?

Oh for sure I will access that resource, but a well-printed and bound book I can look at while working will be superior to PDFs and likely cheaper and easier to work with than a stack of laser printed pages.
Again, I am dissapointed in developers for not including printed manuals with their software packages, and with consumers for permitting it.

And since the app is identical on both, you'd find most of the same
people there. Expand your horizons a bit.
Excellent book for all levels of users.> Thank you. I assume the former is a good intro level book. Does the latter cover more advanced features?

would you have bought it anyway? I prefer the choice.

Ah, but has the savings really showed up on the invoice? Just as outsourcing production costs (Tech. support for some software companies, clothing manufacturing, etc.) is extolled as a cost-cutting measure, and the public is urged to support it as economical for them, I don't see prices coming down. How much was that new pair of Nikes?

Gang--
The CS version of "Real World Adobe InDesign" should be out in about a month. We're pretty much done, we just need to get it printed (we've been slowed by the recent arrival of yet another infant at David's house).
Thanks,
Ole

Re: Book recommendation
Olav--give Dave our congratulations!
The manuals that come with ID haven't been the most wonderful and many if not most of us find that all they do is collect dust and take up shelf space. When a new version comes out I always buy the Real World books and VQGuides the minute they come out!! Trust me, with these books you won't miss the manuals!

Re: Book recommendation
Hi Guy,
Why do you state that the PDF for the manual has more than the actual printed book? The printed book has 375 pages (it's on my desk).
I would agree that the complete Help system in InDesign should have more information than simply the manual, though.
Sincerely yours,
Aaron Malcom

Re: Book recommendation
The Help files are bigger. Go to your installation CD. Look for the Documentation folder (if you have the Creative Suite it will be on the CS Standard Extras CD). Open "Adobe InDesign CS Help." That is 600 pages!

Re: Book recommendation
Hi Guy,
Thanks for the heads up. Does anyone know why they would publish an incomplete manual for the new suite?

Re: Book recommendation
For those interested in purchasing the manuals:
It appears that the PDF's are merely reparsed versions of the two-column smaller type printed manuals. I just did a comparison of different parts of the InDesign CS manuals (PDF and printed) and couldn't find a difference between the actual content.
Does anyone know of places in which they are truly different? I can still return my manuals if so, as I want the complete versions.
Thank you,
Aaron Malcom
