    Hi Kenneth.

I can recommend to excellent books for a beginner. They are general books
and cover all the basics... I recommend buying both straight away and
    reading them cover to cover:-

Firstly read "Understanding Exposure - How to Shoot Great Photographs" by
    Bryan Peterson - ISBN 0-8174-3712-6

Secondly read "Learning to See Creatively - How to Compose Great
Photographs" by Bryan Peterson - ISBN 0-8174-4177-8

I got both book via Amazon.

    Best Regards

    Hi

Two great books that have kept me enthralled when I've been out in
Ireland over the past year have been:

Light in the Landscape by Peter Watson ISBN 1-86108-209-6 and
First Light by Joe Cornish ISBN 1-902538-24-2

    cheers

    Kenneth,

There are a ton of books out there these days on the mechanics or technical
aspects of photography, and you can choose an intro book based on the type
of work in which you are most interested. If nature photography is your aim
you can't go wrong with John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide published
    by Amphoto.

Do you have any particular area of interest?

    Best,
    Eric
