boot loader (grub/suse) question... - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I have (had?) FreeBSD on /dev/hda1 on a pc in my office. I just loaded suse8.1 onto /dev/hda3. I tried to install suse so that when I got done, I'd be able to boot either, but the suse bootloader doesn't seem to know about the FreeBSD partition. fdisk can still see it: 5-202:~ # fdisk /dev/hda ... Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 9415 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 1019 8185086 a5 FreeBSD /dev/hda2 1020 1148 1036192+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hda3 1149 2323 9438187+ 83 Linux ...

    Default boot loader (grub/suse) question...

I have (had?) FreeBSD on /dev/hda1 on a pc in my office.

    I just loaded suse8.1 onto /dev/hda3.

I tried to install suse so that when I got done, I'd be able to boot either,
but the suse bootloader doesn't seem to know about the FreeBSD partition.

    fdisk can still see it:

    5-202:~ # fdisk /dev/hda
    ...
    Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 9415 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/hda1 * 1 1019 8185086 a5 FreeBSD
    /dev/hda2 1020 1148 1036192+ 82 Linux swap
    /dev/hda3 1149 2323 9438187+ 83 Linux

How do I make FreeBSD bootable again?

add a stanza to your boot loader.
You may have to create a mount point and mount it depending which boot
    loader (lilo/grub) you are using.

    D00d! I put "+freebsd +grub" into google and got 31,000 hits.

That URL came up on page 89 <g>...

Anyhow, several of y'all replied, and gave me faith that I had a
grub configuration issue, and that perhaps I had not ed up
    my FreeBSD partition.

I ran strings on /usr/sbin/grub, learned that /boot/grub
was probably an interesting place, found the menu.lst file,
    and added:

    title FreeBSD
    root (hd0,0,a)
    kernel /boot/loader

    And everything is peachy now.

    Thanks again.
