It's been a while since I worked with Quark but I do remember some oddities with the on-screen display. Is it just the preview image that has the white background (in other words, does the Quark page print out with the placed Freehand file image correctly?) Have you made sure that the picture box doesn't have a background color?

What platform are you working on -- Mac or Windows? Does the white
box appear when the file is printed to a PostScript printer (or
distilled to a PDF), or just on screen?

i'm working on a Mac, and it's not just the screen preview that has the white box. printing shows it as well. i feel like i have to create an outline for the paths, or maybe ungroup them and convert something... maybe the eps for quark is not the right answer... getting frustrated...have deadline...

Do the vector drawings contain raster effects, even if attached to open
paths? If so, you may have rasterized white TIFF images in the EPS. If you
have Illustrator, open the EPS files and see what's in there.

It's probably the case that FH is mimicking QX's practice of putting
a white page background under the artwork when exporting EPSFs. I
don't use the Quark EPS format myself when exporting FH art (I'm
still on v8, so something may have changed -- I hope not!) for
printing through QX, just the regular "Macintosh EPS" format. I've
never seen a white background being added to these files. So I
recommend that you try at least one export as "Macintosh EPS"; note
that the bounding box will be sized to your artwork instead of to the
page, unless of course it bleeds in all directions. Also make sure
that the QX picture box in which you place the EPS has a background
colour of "None" -- just in case you haven't done that already.
