Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
Since I've been using a broadband connection, I
can't stay online longer than an hour. Once
the connection stops, the only way to get back
online is to reboot the computer.
There is a new ethernet card and I have also
turned off the Power Management for the card
and for the USB...
The Repair Button in the Control Panel -->
Networks --> Connections --> Support doesn't
do any good either...
I would be very grateful for any solution
to this very irritating problem!

In most cases when u have a broadbandconnection, your Internetprovider
"leases" u an IP adress true his DHCP (dynamic host protocol)-server
for a period of time (1-2 hours) Normally after that time the adress
gets renewed automaticly so the connection keeps up.
To check all the properties of ur connection :
Just open ur dos commandbox (start->all programs->commandprompt) and
type : ipconfig/all<enter>
The last two lines in the list show u when ur lease started( probably
when u started the PC)and when ur lease will end.
When ur connection drops dead at the exact time your lease runs out, u
should check the following things :
You are probably conected Over a 10/100 LAN-networkcard?????
Goto : controlpanel->networkconnections->LANconection->properties->select
internetprotocol(TCP/IP)-> press properties
There u can try to set all the IP options to "automatic".
Hope this works!!

Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
I tried this and so far so good:
OPen regedit at the cmd:
go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip
\Parameters
and set (create of type DWORD if not there)
DisableDHCPMediaSense to 1
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and set (create of type REG_SZ if not there)
KeepRasConnections to 1
reboot

Re: Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
I don't want to badmouth the Alcatel ADSL modem, but I do know that I
had frequent cutoffs when I was using one. Because I was interested in
having a modem-router with built-in firewall, I replaced the Alcatel
"green frog/fish" modem with an Intertex 66ix. Since then, I haven't
experienced a single cutoff in six weeks of use. Previously I was
getting several disconnections each day.
I haven't discussed this problem with my ISP, but I have to suspect
that there are other ADSL modems out there that are superior to the
standard Alcatel that many ISPs provide. Or perhaps my experience is
specific to my line conditions, etc.
I will say that I went through something similiar back when 28.8Kbs
dialup modems first came out and I ditched a cheap-o internal card for
a decent USR external modem. A high-quality modem is generally worth
its price in frustration reduction alone.

Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
Hi Phil -
I gave it a shot, and I was really happy
when I passed the one hour mark(!), but I
got dropped after about an hour and twenty
minutes :(
Thanks for the tip tho'. I also checked
into the tip from wannaske's post and
my options were already set to automatic...
At least it's a couple more things checked
of the List-of-Things-to-Check...
I'm glad it worked for you tho'!
Thanks again :)

Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
This problem is OS related, Phil when saying his friend
has this trouble, he was talking about me :)
I do not have the same time periods as most of you do,
mine will occur normally if I am not doing anything with
the machine and it is on though after 2-3 days of being
on, it will loose net connection, if I am doing alot of
surfing or connections, then it will happen between 1-7
hours, there is no set pattern with mine so far it seems.
But it is the same situation as Phil, and you Jill. This
has nothing to do with the ISP's nor does it have
anything to do with the modem.
I asked another friend who is somewhat of a Networking
Wizard, and based on what I am telling him, he's come to
the conclusion that the problem lies in the tcp/ip Stack
and it getting corrupted. I have not been able to check
this since for the last 3 days my connection has
remained, but it should start acting up soon. My personal
opinion is based on certain things, I have a feeling it
has to do with something with the tcp/ip as well, since
trying to get into the connection properties as well as
trying to get the status window up is near impossible
when this occurs. The last time it happened to me I was
running a program called offline browser, which is a
program that downloads a webpage with all related
content. I had 10 connections going to this website for 1
1/2 hrs. and then lost my connection, and this happened
2x in a span of 4 hours. But again, if I leave the system
up and running for 2-3 days and dont touch it, usually by
the 3rd day the connection dies, and the only recourse to
revive the connection is rebooting.
Lastly I am using a Toshiba Cable modem thru USB, I do
not use a nic card, so it does not seem to be hardware
related nor how its connected to the System/OS, but
something overloading, or corrupting. But yet the event
manager does not show any signs of problems, nor if you
go to the device manager and check the properties of the
connection, so it is internal. And lastly my only guess
as to how and why this is happening is one of the Windows
Updates Hotfix/Critical Fix is the cause, but I am not
sure which is causing it.
The ONLY thing I can suggest is when this happens do not
reboot, but try and re-install the tcp/ip, and the way to
do this would be (using a reply I read before):
To Reinstall TCP/IP do the following:
Navigate to: C:\windows\inf
Find the File: nettcpip.inf
Right click the file and choose install
With regard to the speed of the command, it is
instantaneous, that is why it
will almost seem like it did nothing at all
Hope you have some success with it.ip>-----Original Message-----

Broadband Connection Drops After 1 Hour
Hi Angel -
It would seem to me that if so many other
people are having this problem then
Microsoft would be working a little harder
to fix it, dontcha think?? :)
I tried your suggestion - I waited 'til
my connection got dropped, found the .inf
file and installed it. It blinked as
fast as you said it would, but when I went
to check my connection, I still wasn't :(
Thanks for the thought anyway - another
item knocked off the Things-To-Check list!
Thanks again :)
