Brush Effect

Greetings-

I have a picture that I would like to give the appearance of having been painted.

By painted I mean that I want it to look as though I am still painting the picture (with brush strokes showing) - without changing the appearance of the photo. I simply want to have a partial image of the photo, and that which is showing to look as though it has been brushed on.

How would I do such a thing?

ps7 down and dirty tricks (pg 260) has something similar where scott kelby turns a photo into a sketch. very cool effect. i didn't invent it.

here's a little more detail...

after getting the photo on one layer underneath another layer with the painting version:

select the painting layer.
click the layer mask icon in the layers palette.
make sure your foreground color is black.
select the gradient tool, make sure foreground to transparent is set in the gradient picker (option bar)
drag the gradient to from the center of the image downward (or position to taste).

The photo into a sketch would look cool. I'm not so big on the painting into a photo though.

I dunno...maybe its just how I did it or the picture that I used.

Try this, Use the lasso tools and select the area you want to look painted,then use your filters,brush strokes ,then apply the effect you want to the area.

the rest of the sketch to color method:

1 open image to convert
2 press crtl j to dup. the layer. do filter> stylize> find edges.
3 crtl-shift-U to desaturate.
4 crtl L (levels). move the right input levels slider towards the left to "blow out" the image (removes noise leaving a clean sketch effect).

(then proceed as above)

5 click the layer mask icon in the layers palette. make sure your foreground color is black. select the gradient tool, make sure foreground to transparent is set in the gradient picker (option bar). drag the gradient to from the center of the image downward (or position to taste).

6 as you drag the gradient the layer will become transparent under the gradient revealing the original photo layer below w/a smooth blend. to add a bit of color, change the blend mode to lighten, vivid light or for more color, overlay.

Play with PS7 Art history brush. Or, if you plan to use filters, play with Dry Brush.

You'll do a lot of masking to achieve what you want.

However If I were you I'll consider looking for Corel Painter.

Nice! I like the sketch effect.

I kinda added a few more steps to get a color pencil effect.

1) dup layer twice (2 layers + background)
2) Top layer-find edges
3) Adjust levels (set to color burn)
4) Middle layer-crosshatch (set to overlay)
5) bachground layer-texturizer (canvas)
