In animation (and for that matter 'film grading' and post-production generally) - frankly anyone who DOESN'T use Photoshop these days is an idiot.

Re: But does Adobe Know????
Interesting post, Mark.
I work at one of the major animation studios, and while Photoshop is a valuable tool here, it's hardly universally used. Out of several hundred workstations - most running Linux dual-booted with Windows - only a very small number have Photoshop installed.
I hadn't realized we were all idiots, but it's thoughtful of you to point it out.

Re: But does Adobe Know????
Some folks also use The Gimp. <http://www.gimp.org> For video, they use CinePaint (formerly called film gimp <http://filmgimp.sourceforge.net>). These programs run on several platforms, without the MS tax... and they help ensure that Photoshop keeps moving ahead.

Re: But does Adobe Know????
Dennis – guess I was provoking a reaction. I've always wondered about this. What I meant was the sheer power and precision of Photoshop. Its flexibility, its interface for creative use, and most importantly (in this field) color control and selection, which is visibly so 'crude' in much CG animation.
Its like having a Ferrari siting in your drive while driving around town in a Focus.
