Buying a Canon 70 200 L series lens - where to go ? - Photography

Hi all, I am close to buying a Canon 70 200 2.8 IS and am interested to hear which shops/outlets people have good or bad experiences with. Obviously price is a factor but it is not the be all - I would rather buy locally (although those US prices are very tempting - how much duty do you have to pay ?) and from someone that I can build some kind of relationship with for ongoing purchases and in the case of any problems. I am in Melbourne, so that really dictates a Melbourne retailer. thanks Simon...

Ifyou want a bricks and mortar store, I would say that the best in Melbourne
is the Camera Exchange in the city. The guys really know there stuff, and
    seem to care for customers.

If you want the best price in Australia, go to dirtcheapcameras.com.au. You
will hear a lot of good reports on them.

From the states, you will have to pay GST on both the camera and shipping
(after converting the price to AUD), plus you will have to pay about $50 for
a customs handling fee. Now that is what you have to pay by decree, but some
people report that there packages have arrived without them paying. Guess
they were lucky in avoiding the fees.

    US prices: USD1650 + USD70 shipping = AUD 2580 *1.1 = 2838, therefor about
    2900 bucks
    Dirtcheap prices: 3321 bucks

Thus you are paying about 15% more for the privilege of buying in Aus. I
would add another 5-10% for buying from Camera Exchange.

Yes, I agree. They're probably the best bet for online shops (in
    Australia).

Plus there's the warranty thing that people will always bring up...
maybe canon will cover it, maybe not. Depends on who you ask ;)

Try Quality Cameras in Burwood, speak to Dave or Ross
They are the sister shop to Camera Exchange, but smaller and more
    personalised service

Thanks everybody for the feedback - I have ordered (these lenses are on back
order everywhere I spoke to) one of these little beauties from Kirk's in
    Ringwood.

They were helpful, up front and gave me a price I was happy with - more than
    Dirt Cheap but pretty good.

As I'll be buying more equipment over the next 6-9 months, it is important
to me to buy from somewhere I can deal with face to face - I also like to
    support local business.

    cheers

    Simon

Send him an e-mail, tell him exactly what you want and he'll give you a
price insured and delivered to your door. It usually takes 3 to 6 days for
the goodies to arrive and you save heaps. net

    Thanks Doug,
Can you vouch for this guy? Have you or others used him for a while?

This is the hidden man in Hong Kong
I bought 2500 worth off him and got it in 4 days
Quite a few Perth photographers buy from him too.
You'll find a list of his stuff at Fred Miranda's forums I won't vouch for
anyone. All I can say is I've had nothing but good service from him and I
know for a fact the guy who recommended him to me (Henrik) has too. A 70~200
2.8 LIS is $3300+ at PhotoContinental. He sells 'em for $2450 plus GST (if
    you have to pay it).

Thanks, seems very cheap indeed, assuming that the price you mentioned is
    final/landed price.
