Default Calibrate Monitor

I need some assistance calibrating my monitor/printer. I just
purchased an Epson 2200. I use XP Pro and several software image
programs. Regardless of which software I use all the prints come out
with inaccurate color. What suggestions does anyone have on what/how
I need to calibrate my system. I have the latest drivers, etc. I
tested with several different images, all with less than satisfactory
results. I'd rather not have to purchase another device to calibrate
my monitor.

Thanks Everyone!

Are you using the pritner's branded ink cartridges? I'm sure you are if it a
'new' printer, but that it the first place to start. Some 3rd party
cartridges are great but others are very poor.

The instructions at http://www.campratty.com/1faq/faqpages/b9a.html are for
Paint Shop Pro, but it is easy to adapt them to other image editing
software. If that doesn't pretty much solve theproble, - beyond what can be
done by tweaking the printer, look into printer problems.

IMHO, the devices for calibrating a monitor are needed only by pros.

I'm using Epson Ink and Paper. What I see on the monitor looks great
but aweful when printed.

Any thoughts?

The August 2003 issue of Popular Photography has an excellent article on
Monitors for photography. One of the sections addresses calibration. Might
be worth the $3.99 USD or 2.75BP.

A couple of years ago I bought an Epson printer. Ended up taking it
back & getting a different kind of printer because I could not adjust it
so that my colours were correct. What problem are you having? I could
not make mine print blues accurately - everything was too red, and my
photos of blue flowers were printing out purple. I actually took some
files in and made them print test images on a few printers before I
chose one to exchange for the Epson.

You didn't mention how you acquired your images.

I have WinXP + Epson 2200 + Epson Perfection 3200 scanner.

I got really blue blues, ugly reds and dripping wet prints when I tried to
use Epson's PIM.
I went back and rescanned my originals after making sure I selected "scan to
file" instead of "scan to PIM." I don't know what I did wrong and quit
trying to use PIM.

You can get wrong colors if you print on the wrong side of the paper -- most
Epson paper is single-sided. I thought that you could possibly have switched
cartridges with its neighbor, but I just tried; you can't. The cartridges
are keyed (and I didn't want to try harder to force them in!).
