Camino Strangeness (or is it me?) - Mac Networking

Camino is my preferred web browser. Some time in the last umpteen months I became aware that the star ratings users apply to the products sold at amazon.com were not displaying properly. Default Camino Strangeness (or is it me?)

Camino is my preferred web browser. Some time in the last umpteen months
I became aware that the star ratings users apply to the products sold at
amazon.com were not displaying properly. (See the below-mentioned web
page to see what I mean.) These ratings DO display properly in my other
browsers. Today I found the time to do a bit of troubleshooting. Here is
    what I learned:

    1) Amazon's star ratings are in the form of .gif files.
    2) I normally run with my display depth set to thousands of colors.
    3) Using Camino, the star ratings only display properly in millions of
    colors.
    4) This seems a bit of overkill for displaying 256-color .gif graphics.

For fun I took Amazon's .gif graphics and converted them to .jpg and
..png. Only the .jpg images display properly in thousands of colors. Here
is a web page that attempts to illustrate what I'm talking about:

    <http://www.webenet.net/~schram/stars/stars.html>

I'd be interested to read what others see on that page using a variety
of web browsers and display depths. If Camino is the only strange
browser in the lot, I'll send in a bug report.

FWIW, I am running Mac OS X 10.3.4 on a 400 MHz Sawtooth G4 with stock
ATI Rage 128 Pro video card and an NEC MultiSync 50 monitor.

I can confirm the problem in Camino with display set to thousands of
colors. Firefox handles it correctly at the same display setting, so it
must be something specific to Camino.

It would appear to be a problem of handling the transparency in the gif.
I downloaded a star rating gif image and added a white background in
Photoshop. Camino was then able to handle the image normally with the
display set to thousands of colors.

Interesting. I haven't noticed this problem since I use millions of
colors rather than 1000s. Does the problem occur using the recently
released 0.8b version of Camino, as well as in the 0.7b version?

Yes. That is the version I used to confirm the original poster's bug.
I too use millions of colors even though I only have a B&W G3/300. I'm
not sure the fewer colors would significantly increase performance.
