Can a template be recreated if current one is gone?
Can a new template be created from a website that had a template, but now that
template is no longer available?
Here is the problem we are facing: We had a company design a website for us
about a year ago. Recently we asked for a backup copy on CD of the web site,
but it did not include the template used for the site. To make matters worse,
the relationship has deteriorated to the point that we finally fired the
company and brought all the web site development in house.
How do we create a new template that will still update the rest of the site?
Can this be done?
The web site is http://www.michaelhsilvers.com
Any help and guidance would be so much appreciated.

Re: Can a template be recreated if current one is gone?
Which DW are you using?
Anyhow, this will be a piece of cake. Start by making a full backup of the
site. Then, open the page linked below (or any other page in the site) in
DW, and add an HTML comment to each editable region identifying its start
and end location, e.g., change this -
<h1><!-- #BeginEditable "title" -->Specializing In<!-- #EndEditable --></h1>
to this -
<h1><!-- #BeginEditable "title" --><!-- begin title -->Specializing In<!--
end title --><!-- #EndEditable --></h1>
(I chose a short one for demonstration, but you get the idea)
Then use MODIFY | Templates > Detach from template to remote all template
markup from the page.
Now use FILE | Save as template, to reinsert the Template-specific markup on
the page. IMPORTANT - save the file in this step with a name OTHER than the
original template's name. Now, go through the page, redefining each
editable region based on the comments you inserted previously (that's why
you inserted them). When you have this file containing exactly the same
number of editable regions as the original, each with exactly the same name,
then save this file with the original Template's name.
Finally, open one of the child pages, and use MODIFY | Templates > Update
files..., and do a site-wide update of all child pages.
That should do it.

Re: Can a template be recreated if current one is gone?
Hi Murray,
You are awesome! Thank you so much for your reply. We have been using DW MX
2004, but just upgraded to Studio 8. We didn't do the design work though. We
had it for office use purposes really. (Intranet stuff). Anyway I'll try this
immediately and let you know how it goes.
Thank you again! :-)

Re: Can a template be recreated if current one is gone?
It should be simple simon, since it looks like the previous template was
built in DW4 or earlier.
