Contribute doesn't need any sort of special server configurations that I know
of, unless you want to use Contribute publishing services. All of Contribute's
FTP information is handled by connection keys, no anonymous FTP or anything
like that is needed.
It creates a \_mm\contribute.xml file on your web root to store some
additional setings, but no biggie.
$20 dollars? Here's a pretty good deal for below $10.

Basic service for 7.95 / month.
They are a Unix box company that I've used for at least 8 or 9 years for all
of my websites.
The service they give is just great.
Also, no special service is required for Contribute.
