Have you noticed the increasing amount of people that are asking this type of question now. I think it as something to do with the stupid way you now have to export backwards to previous versions instead of save as.

I often want to work on a version 8.0 file and have it stay as a version 8.0 file.
The new way Illustrator handles this type of thing is rubbish. That's why we're seeing so many questions asking how, when in the past this problem never arose.

People have to work with the older versions because of the incompatibilities of CS with existing software including Illustrator 10

You may think that it's stupid, but people thoughtlessly Save As all the time without think of the consequences of their action. The Save As command is reversed for commands like Save As to PDF where you're not going to lose information.

Save As to a previous version of Illustrator has a serious risk of leaving your type uneditable! Thus saving to "legacy" formats of Illustrator and now under Export.
