Default Can I Type on a path of a shape that has had an effect applied to it ?

    I made a thin rectangle.

I than applied a flag effect to the rectangle to make it wavy.

I than clicked on the "TYPE ON PATH" tool and clicked on the wavy rectangle.

The wavy rectangle disappeared and than type typed out in a plain stratiht line.

Thats not what I was shooting for. I wanted the type to type out wavy.

Any way I can do that on a effect applied shape ? And also, Why does the shape dissapear when when I click on it with the type path tool ?

    Thanks
    Mike

    Mike,

No and yes. Make your rectangle with it's effects, then Control C copy it, then Control F paste in front. Now apply your text to THAT path (which will be already selected). The rectangle and effect will disappear and only the path for text will remain of that object (all color and effects will disappear), however the original one will still remain and the text will follow the copied path as you wish.

In other words, when I type on a path that has had an effect applied to it, the type does not follow the effected path, it follows the original path.

Patience, my lad. This is a user forum, not a 24/7 hotline.

What you've described is normal. Illustrator applies the flag effect without altering the underlying path, which is your problem.

Click on your wavy rectangle and select Object | Expand Appearance.

You may now use the type on path tool on the wavy object to your heart's content.
