CAN I VIEW... the new resolution of an imageafter resizing in InDesign CS?
Hello there.
I'm laying out images at 300ppi for a newsletter then at 150ppi for digital repro
(to achieve greater printed scale.)
• I wonder if I can I assess the new resolution of an image after resizing in InDesign CS,
or if I must make this assessment seperately in Photoshop?
• I thought I found a way to check in InDesign once, which would save a lot of time.
However now, when I check the Link Information from the Links Palette, the resolution info
only seems to relate to the sourced file before I've enlarged it.
• Re: resolution for digital print. I've been told the minimum resolution should be anything between 300ppi and 72ppi. I know i can get away with 150ppi for a newsletter and produce good quality images. I think 100ppi is OK for a poster viewed at a distance. Any shared thoughts on this would be welcome.
Kind Regards
Gill

Or just Flightcheck the document, then look under the Links and Images section. Select each image listing, and it will give you Actual PPI and Effective PPI.

Many Thanks, Martin & Tom.
I feel very silly. I've been resizing in Photoshop and then importing.
I imagine then, this was completely unnecessary. Or are there any hidden benefits in taking the Photoshop route that I'm missing?
Cheers

Depends on the purpose and the image. If the image is large and you shrink it in ID then you get an image that is bigger than it needs to be with a ppi that is higher than needed and takes longer time to print than if you resize to smaller size in Photoshop first and then palce into ID.

One important reason: you have more control over the result in Photoshop than with InDesign. The "Bicubic sharper" yields a better quality to start with than anything InDesign will give you. You can even add a careful unsharp mask after resampling.
Another reason: the size of the screen-preview for the image. This is built during import in the size of the image. When you scale down all your images considerably in InDesign your InDesign file will bloat a lot more than necessary.

This is the most important reason to resize images in Photoshop, especially if you are working on high quality work. if its a few % points up or down resizing in ID is fine. but when ID has massive resampling it will turn your image to mush.

Re: CAN I VIEW... the new resolution of animage after resizing in InDesign CS?
Mush? Eek!
So is it really true that a high res image sized in IND by say 25%+ will be mushy?
More info please! Are there any ranges you can suggest....
0-20% ok / 20% to 40% a bit risky / 40% - 60% mushy in anyone's book
or something...
:-)
Thanks

for me the limit is 10% up or down.

Re: CAN I VIEW... the new resolution of animage after resizing in InDesign CS?
If you are going to be that particular of Indesign's resampling for scaled images, you may as well take care of rotated images. Images rotated in Indesign are suspect to the same resampling limitation and for best result, rotate image in Photoshop.

Re: CAN I VIEW... the new resolution of animage after resizing in InDesign CS?
More on this thread...
In my IND doc, I've imported a 300ppi image and enlarged it.
Because this is for a digitally printed poster, I'll happily acept an effective resolution of 150ppi.
When I click my image and view the Info palette, IND tells me that the actuall ppi is 300x300
and the effective resolution is 299 x299. Yet when I read how much the image as been scaled up, it's 283.29% of the original size!
Clearly somethings wrong in the readings here.
Any ideas?
Kind Regards
Gill
